Today in the 21st match of T20 World Cup 2012, West Indies defeated New Zealand in the Super Over and ended New Zealand’s T20 World Cup hopes.
Earlier New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first. Their decision was fruitful as J Charles got out in the second over of the match leaving West Indies at 14/1 in 1.5 overs. A Russell also got out soon but Chris Gayle and M Samuels then took the team score past 50 but none of them could convert it into a big score. K Pollard then scored 22 ball 28 to help West Indies post 139/10 in 19.3 overs.
Chasing 140 to win and keep the semi final hopes alive, New Zealand lost Rob Nicol in the third over when the score was just 8. M Guptill and Brendon McCullum then steadied the innings and took the score to 41 before McCullum got out. Soon Guptill also got out leaving the kiwis at 52/3 at 9 overs. Ross Taylor was the only hope for New Zealand who scored a brilliant 62 off 40 balls.
New Zealand needed 14 in the last over and Ross Tylor didn’t let them down. He scored 4 in first 3 balls and then hit a six thus needed 3 off last 2 balls. Finally they needed 2 to win but Doug Bracewell got run out and thus the match entered into the Super Over.
New Zealand were asked to bat first as earlier they fielded first. McCullum and Taylor were nominated for batting and they scored 17 runs in the Super Over. Chasing 18 to win, West Indies opened with Gayle and Samuels. The very first ball from Southee was a no ball and was smashed for a six by Gayle. Samuels then hit a six on the 5th ball to win the match for West Indies.
